Alec Marsh

Alec Marsh

The author of the Drabble & Harris Thrillers chats about his series and his writing.

What prompted you to write about Drabble & Harris, and the Inter-War period? The idea for my first novel, Rule Britannia, was inspired by two things – first I remember reading about Oliver Cromwell’s head, and how it had been in private hands for hundreds of...

Oliver Webb-Carter

On Remembrance Sunday, 8th November 1987 in Enniskillen in Northern Ireland, a bombing took place that proved to be a turning point in The Troubles. 12 civilians were killed, the final victim having died 13 years later in December 2000, with ages ranging from 20 to...

Politics & War: Lawrence Freedman Interview

Politics & War: Lawrence Freedman Interview

Lawrence Freedman has examined the personalities and circumstances involved in wars from Korea to Ukraine in a new book. Our editor discussed some of those conflicts, and characters, that defined the latter half of the 20th century.

Lawrence Freedman, what were there certain criteria you used to pick the conflicts that are in the book?  The starting point was first that I was going to look at post 1945. So that was the big decision. There's lots of stuff written about command in the World Wars...

How the Russians See Themselves

How the Russians See Themselves

With Putin’s pronouncements on his nuclear threat, this is consistent with previous rulers’ sabre rattling, and speaks to Russia’s pride in how it sees itself. Sir Rodric Braithwaite, British Ambassador in Moscow from 1989 to 1992, describes the Russian mindset.
Rodric Braithwaite

How the Russians See Themselves If you want to work out what your opponent is likely to do next, you need to understand how he sees himself. During the Cold War our judgement of Soviet behaviour was often distorted by prejudice, ignorance, and wishful thinking....

The Fight for Parry’s Jerusalem

Jason Whitaker

The Fight for Parry’s Jerusalem On March 11, 1916, Sir Hubert Parry handed a manuscript that would transform how the English saw themselves to his friend, Henry Walford Davies, with the rather casual words: “Here’s a tune for you, old chap. Do what you like with it.”...

A P Handley on Tabarin

A P Handley on Tabarin

The author of the Danny Rook series discusses the fourth novel, set during the Falklands War.
A P Handley

A P Handley, your last novel was Tabarin. I’ve never heard that word before. Where did you get the title? Well, as I understand it, before the war there was a night club in Paris with the same name, so although I pronounce my book ‘Tabar‑in’, I guess the French would...

Lucy Ashe

Lucy Ashe

The author discusses her novels, inspiration and favourite moments of history.
Lucy Ashe

Lucy Ashe, what prompted you to choose the period that you wrote your first book in? I knew I wanted my novel to be set at a time of new beginnings for British Ballet, and the early 1930s was an important transitional time. Ninette de Valois founded the Vic-Wells...

The Bitter Legacy of Partition

The Bitter Legacy of Partition

The human cost of Partition is a tragedy that defines the relationship between India and Pakistan today.

The Bitter Legacy of Partition In 2008 I was commanding British and allied troops in South-East Iraq. We had been withdrawn from Basrah city the previous summer and were now based at the airport in insufficient numbers to do much more than protect ourselves. None of...
