Gordon Corrigan

Gordon Corrigan

Gordon Corrigan was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1962 and was an officer of the permanent cadre of the Royal Gurkha Rifles before leaving the army in 1998. Having left, he considered that he was knowledgeable in only two fields: horses and history, and as working with horses is a recipe for going bust, albeit going bust in style, he decided that history was a safer bet. He is now a professional historian.

Generalship from Marlborough to Wellington

Generalship from Marlborough to Wellington

The acclaimed historian writes about the art of generalship among key British leaders of the long 18th century.
Jeremy Black

Never easy, the assessment of generalship becomes more difficult when you go back in time and the sources are less extensive. All-too-often the discussion becomes that of battles lost and won as in Hannibal must be good because he won at Cannae or Napoleon at...

Zulu Court: Farini and the ‘Ethnic Exhibitions’

Zulu Court: Farini and the ‘Ethnic Exhibitions’

The Victorians had a fascination with the unknown which resulted in the vulnerable being taken advantage of. The author of a new novel set in the period tells us about five Zulu men and their attempt for freedom through the British courts.
Mick Finlay

The story in my latest book, Arrowood and the Meeting House Murders, is inspired by the true story of five Zulu men from Natal (Somanquasane, Inconda, Maquasa, Istri and Inaquala) who appeared in Westminster Police Court three times in December, 1879, and January,...
