The past is never dead, it isn’t even past

Brian Williams was born in Ormskirk in West Lancashire in 1974. The son of a history teacher, from an early age Brian developed a love of history especially the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War. One of his most vivid childhood memories is of his father spreading a map of Belgium on the dinner table to explain Napoleon’s campaign that ended at his final defeat at Waterloo and exile on St Helena. All this after Brian returned from a trip to the local library with a simple question “Who was Napoleon?”
The figure of Marshal Ney, Napoleon’s Bravest of the Brave, famed for his courage under fire who died a condemned traitor held a fascination which is why Brian made him the subject for his work Marshal Ney: Fall from Glory which was published in August 2025.
Brian studied history at Lancaster University before moving to London to work in the Civil Service. In 2003 he joined the British Transport Police. During his service Brian has worked in a variety of uniform and investigative roles. He continues to serve as a uniform police constable walking a beat at one of Europe’s busiest railway stations.
Brian is the father of two daughters, Charlotte and Megan, and lives with his wife, Rachel, in London.
